Golden-hour Zaragoza with the Basílica del Pilar's domes reflected in the Ebro

Plaza del Pilar

landmark·$·El Tubo/Casco

One of the largest pedestrian squares in Europe — some 24,000 square metres, and one of the very few in Spain flanked by two cathedrals, the Basílica del Pilar and La Seo. Around it stand the Renaissance Lonja, the City Hall and the Goya monument, and the Fuente de la Hispanidad, whose cascade evokes the map of Latin America, anchors its southern end. This is the ceremonial heart of Zaragoza, and the natural place to begin.

Insider Intel

Don't Miss

A slow crossing that takes in both cathedrals, the Renaissance Lonja and the Fuente de la Hispanidad. This is an orientation point as much as a sight.

Best Time

Golden hour, when the light warms the basilica's brick and the square fills for the evening paseo. Early morning for it near-empty.

Know Before You Go

Free and always open. Flanked by two cathedrals — a rarity in Spain. The best vantage on the whole ensemble, and the start of any Zaragoza walk.
