Cathedral of the Good Shepherd

historic·$·Centro

Neo-Gothic cathedral completed in 1897, the largest religious building in San Sebastian. Soaring spire, stained glass, and the civic formality of a Belle Époque city at its peak. Not ancient, but historically significant as the symbol of the city's 19th-century expansion.

Don't Miss

The exterior is best appreciated from Plaza del Buen Pastor — the spire dominates the square. Inside, the neo-Gothic arches, stained glass, and organ are worth a look. The church is active for worship. Climb the tower if it is open (check ahead) for views over Centro.

Best Time

Late morning or afternoon when the church is open for visitors. The plaza in front is a good rest stop during city walks. Evening when the cathedral is lit.

Know Before You Go

Built between 1888–1897 during San Sebastian's expansion beyond the old town walls. The city was growing rapidly as a royal resort and needed a cathedral to match its ambitions. Designed by Manuel de Echave in neo-Gothic style modeled on Cologne Cathedral. The spire is 75 meters tall and visible across the city. It became the cathedral seat of the Diocese of San Sebastian in 1953. Not as artistically significant as older Spanish cathedrals, but essential for understanding the city's modern history and Belle Époque aspirations.
