Grand Belle Époque palace from 1912 that has anchored the city's cultural life for over a century. This is where the film festival stays, where heads of state sign the guest book, and where the Urumea river meets the kind of gilded lobbies that no longer get built. Recently brought under Marriott's Luxury Collection banner with a sensitive renovation that preserved the original theatricality while modernising everything behind the plasterwork.

Room Tip

Request a river-facing room on an upper floor — the views along the Urumea toward the mountains are the reason this hotel exists at this address. During the San Sebastián Film Festival in September, the hotel becomes a scene unto itself and rates reflect it. The spa is understated but well-executed, and the bar off the lobby is the best place in the city for a late-afternoon gin and tonic in period surroundings.

Best Time

Year-round, but September during the film festival is the hotel at its most electric. Book months ahead for festival dates. Spring and early autumn offer the best balance of weather, rates, and atmosphere without the summer crowds.

Know Before You Go

The Marriott Luxury Collection affiliation means points redemptions are possible, which can represent extraordinary value for a hotel of this calibre. The Centro location is walkable to everything — Parte Vieja, La Concha beach, the pintxo bars. Parking is valet-only and expensive; you do not need a car in San Sebastián. The lobby café serves a proper afternoon tea that locals actually use.
