Nearly 2,000 years old and still the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. The oculus at the apex lets in rain and light. When it rains, the water falls directly onto the marble floor and drains through nearly invisible holes. Architectural perfection.

Walk inside and stand beneath the oculus. The proportions are mathematically precise — the height equals the diameter (43.3 meters). The coffers in the dome reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity. Rafael is buried here, along with Italian kings. Spend at least 15 minutes letting the space register.
Early morning when the light beam through the oculus is most dramatic. Avoid midday tourist rush. The piazza outside (Piazza della Rotonda) is pleasant for a coffee at the cafes — overpriced but the view of the portico justifies it.
Built by Hadrian around AD 125 on the site of an earlier temple by Agrippa (the inscription on the portico refers to Agrippa, not Hadrian — Roman modesty). Converted to a Christian church in 609 AD, which saved it from the looting that destroyed most Roman temples. The bronze ceiling of the portico was stripped by Pope Urban VIII in 1632 to make cannons for Castel Sant'Angelo — hence the Roman saying: 'What the barbarians did not do, the Barberini did.' Free entry since 2023 became paid — verify current policy. One of the most influential buildings in Western architecture.
