Golden hour Rome with terracotta rooftops and ancient domes

Roman Forum

historic·$$$·Foro Romano

The civic and commercial heart of ancient Rome — temples, basilicas, triumphal arches scattered across a valley between the Palatine and Capitoline hills. What remains is fragments, but the scale and historical density are unmatched.

Don't Miss

Enter from the Palatine side if possible — fewer crowds, better orientation. Walk the Via Sacra (the main ceremonial road) and identify the Temple of Saturn, Arch of Septimius Severus, and the Curia (Senate House). The House of the Vestal Virgins is worth finding. Bring water and wear a hat — there is almost no shade.

Best Time

Early morning or last two hours before closing. The light improves as the day progresses. Combined ticket with Colosseum and Palatine is valid for two consecutive days — split your visit if the heat or crowds are overwhelming.

Know Before You Go

The Forum was the center of Roman political life for over a thousand years. After the fall of the Western Empire, it was systematically looted and buried under meters of earth (Campo Vaccino — cow field). Excavations began in the 18th century and continue today. Most of what you see dates from the late Republic and Imperial periods (1st century BC to 4th century AD). Reconstructing the original appearance requires imagination — bring a guidebook or use an AR app.
