The Flavian Amphitheater — 50,000 spectators, AD 80, and the most recognizable monument from antiquity. The engineering remains astonishing: trapdoors, elevators, drainage systems carved into the substructure. Essential Rome.

Don't Miss

Book the Underground and Arena Floor tour if available — standard admission gives you the perimeter view, which is insufficient. The hypogeum (underground chambers where gladiators and animals waited) reveals the mechanics of spectacle. Combine ticket with Forum and Palatine — they are adjacent and part of the same archaeological zone.

Best Time

First entry slot of the day (8:30am in summer) or late afternoon. Midday sun is brutal and crowds peak. Book tickets weeks in advance for arena floor access — they sell out. Winter months have shorter queues and better light for photography.

Know Before You Go

Construction began under Vespasian in AD 72, completed by Titus in AD 80. The name Colosseum comes from the colossal statue of Nero that stood nearby. Two-thirds of the original structure is gone — marble was stripped for centuries to build Renaissance palaces. The arena floor you see is a modern reconstruction; originally it was wooden and covered with sand. Gladiator fights ended in the 5th century. Still the greatest engineering achievement of ancient Rome.
