Insider Intel
The permanent collection is chronological from top floor down. Start on the second floor with the Renaissance and Dutch masters. Ground floor holds the 19th and 20th century — Hopper's Hotel Room, German Expressionists, Kandinsky. The Carmen Thyssen Collection (ground floor) adds Spanish and American works.
Weekday afternoon. Far less crowded than the Prado despite the quality. Monday mornings are quietest (the Prado is closed Mondays — strategic planning for serious museum visitors).
Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza assembled one of the world's greatest private art collections over 50 years. Spain acquired it in 1993 (the Baron's Spanish wife lobbied for Madrid over other bidders). 1,600 works spanning 700 years. The museum complements the Prado (which lacks Impressionism and modern art) and Reina Sofía (which starts at 1900). The three museums form the Paseo del Arte — get the combined ticket if doing all three. Excellent audioguide. Worth a full visit if museum capacity allows.
