Insider Intel
Enter from Puerta de Alcalá and walk south to the lake. Rent a rowboat if the weather cooperates. The Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal) is at the southern end near the lake — the iron and glass structure hosts rotating contemporary art installations. Walk the rose garden (Rosaleda) in spring. The Fallen Angel statue is the only public monument to Lucifer in the world.
Sunday morning for the full Madrid experience — families, street performers, book market near Cuesta de Moyano. Weekday afternoon for quieter walks. Avoid peak summer midday heat. Spring and autumn are ideal for the gardens.
Originally a royal retreat (retiro means retreat) built for Philip IV in the 1630s. Opened to the public in 1868 after the monarchy fell. The Velázquez Palace and Crystal Palace are both used for temporary art exhibitions (part of the Reina Sofía). The park has over 15,000 trees and is the lungs of central Madrid. Free entry. Essential for understanding how Madrid uses public space.
