Tight

dive·$·Shinjuku

A standing bar in Golden Gai that might hold five people if they are extremely comfortable with physical contact, and three if they are not. Tight earns its name with absolute literalness — the room is the width of a corridor, the ceiling is low, and the bar counter is a shelf barely wide enough for a glass. The appeal is the compression itself: you are standing shoulder to shoulder with strangers in a space that obliterates the possibility of anonymity, and the conversations that form in this enforced intimacy are the point. The drinks are cheap, the mama-san is welcoming to foreigners, and the whole experience is a distillation of what makes Golden Gai extraordinary — human connection in a space that allows nothing else.

Order This

Beer (500 yen), shochu and water (600 yen), or a whisky highball (700 yen). The menu is what you see behind the counter. Do not expect craft cocktails; expect cheap drinks served fast in a room where the social dimension is the product. The mama-san may offer snacks — accept them.

Best Time

After 9pm on a weeknight when the bar is full enough to generate conversation but Golden Gai is not overcrowded. Three people makes the room feel lively. Six makes it an experience in spatial compression that you will either love or flee within minutes.

Know Before You Go

Located in Golden Gai's alleys — ask at any neighboring bar if you cannot find it. Standing room only, no seats. Cover charge of approximately 500 yen. Cash only. The bar is popular with foreign visitors specifically because it is welcoming, which creates a self-selecting crowd of travelers open to conversation. Open from around 8pm. If the door is open and there is room, walk in. If there is not room, there is genuinely not room.
