Start at the top (Plaza de Cascorro) and work downhill along Ribera de Curtidores. The antiques and quality vintage are on the side streets off the main drag. Bargaining is expected. Watch your belongings — pickpockets work the crowds. Afterward, vermouth and tapas at the bars in La Latina (Cava Baja is the traditional post-Rastro destination).
Sunday morning 9am-2pm (the official hours). Arrive early (9-10am) for the best selection and thinner crowds. By noon it is shoulder-to-shoulder. The market winds down by 2pm and most stalls are gone by 3pm.
Operating since the 15th century — originally a livestock and tanning district (rastro means trail, from dragging animal carcasses). The market has over 1,000 stalls and draws 100,000+ visitors each Sunday. Most items are junk but quality antiques, vintage posters, and leather goods appear. Cash only at most stalls. The surrounding bars and cafés are packed post-market — this is a Madrid ritual. Expect crowds, noise, and the full sensory experience of a working market.
