Intimate museum dedicated to Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), Bologna's most important modern painter, now housed at MAMbo (Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna) on Via Don Minzoni after relocating from its former home in Palazzo d'Accursio. Still lifes of bottles and boxes painted with such obsessive repetition they become metaphysical.

Insider Intel

Don't Miss

The collection is small but complete — drawings, etchings, and paintings spanning Morandi's career. The repetition is the point: the same bottles, the same boxes, painted hundreds of times with slight shifts in light and composition. What looks boring is actually radical. Spend time with a few works rather than rushing through.

Best Time

Weekday when the museum is nearly empty — Morandi's work demands quiet attention. Combine with Piazza Maggiore and the Archiginnasio.

Know Before You Go

The Morandi collection moved from Palazzo d'Accursio (Piazza Maggiore) to MAMbo at Via Don Minzoni 14. Morandi spent his entire life in Bologna, painting still lifes in his studio on Via Fondazza. He refused abstraction, refused narrative, painted the same objects for 50 years. His work influenced minimalism and conceptual art despite being figurative. The museum holds over 200 works donated by his sisters. If you find Morandi boring, you are not looking slowly enough.
