Walk the portico from Porta Saragozza — it takes about 45 minutes uphill at a steady pace. The rhythm of arches becomes meditative. At the top, the basilica interior is baroque theater (Bibiena family architects). But the real reward is the terrace: Bologna spread below, the hills behind, the sense of having earned the view.
Early morning for the walk up when the light slants through the arches and you encounter locals doing their morning exercise. Late afternoon for sunset from the basilica terrace. Avoid midday heat in summer — there is no shade outside the portico.
The portico was built 1674-1793 to allow the icon of the Madonna to be carried to the city without exposure to weather. Locals walk it for exercise, pilgrimage, or tradition. The 666 arches are numbered. The basilica houses an icon supposedly painted by Saint Luke (unlikely, but the belief persists). You can drive or take a bus to the top, but walking the portico is the point — it is one of the great architectural experiences in Italy.
