A Baroque hilltop sanctuary above Bologna, reached by the world's longest portico — 666 arches climbing nearly four kilometers up the Colle della Guardia. The covered walkway, built so a venerated icon could be carried up in any weather, is itself the pilgrimage; the church at the top rewards the climb with panoramic views over the city and the Emilian plain. Generations of Bolognese have made the ascent on foot. For visitors with the legs for it, the walk beneath the endless arches is one of the city's great experiences, and the view is the reward.
