Walk the perimeter to understand the architectural layers: Palazzo d'Accursio (city hall since 1336), Palazzo del Podestà with its whispering corners, San Petronio (deliberately left unfinished — the Pope feared it would surpass St. Peter's). Stand in the center at dusk when the university students arrive for aperitivo and the piazza fills with exactly the energy it has held for centuries.
Early morning for the piazza empty — you can actually hear the acoustic echo under Palazzo del Podestà. Evening for the passeggiata when locals reclaim the space from day tourists. Avoid midday summer when tour groups cluster around San Petronio.
San Petronio's facade was never finished — look closely and you will see bare brick where marble was meant to go. The Pope blocked funds in 1562, fearing Bologna's basilica would outsize the Vatican. The piazza has hosted everything from medieval trials to Lucio Dalla concerts. Locals measure walking distance across Bologna in 'piazzas' — this is the zero point. The porticoes that radiate from here total over 40km. Rain never stopped a Bolognese errand.
