Walk the perimeter path, rent a pedal boat on the lake if you are feeling nostalgic, sit on the grass with a book or aperitivo supplies. The park fills with university students, families, joggers, and picnickers. There are kiosks selling drinks and snacks. The atmosphere is deeply local — tourists rarely make it this far south.
Late afternoon and early evening in spring and summer when the park fills with locals. Sunday for people-watching. Avoid midday heat with no shade.
Opened in 1879 and named after Queen Margherita of Savoy. The lake is artificial, the landscaping follows English romantic garden principles. During university term, students use the park as an outdoor study hall and social space. It's the closest thing Bologna has to communal green space — the centro storico is porticoes and stone. Bring your own wine and food, find a spot on the grass, observe Bologna at rest.
