Lluís Domènech i Montaner's former hospital complex — now the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau, a UNESCO World Heritage site that operated as a hospital from 1930 to 2009 — is the most undervisited modernisme masterpiece in Barcelona. The campus consists of 12 pavilions connected by underground tunnels, each decorated with mosaics, sculptures, and ceramic work that embodies the belief that beauty aids healing. The scale and ambition rival the Sagrada Família, and the absence of crowds makes the experience more intimate. After closure, the complex was restored and opened as a museum and cultural centre.

Insider Intel
Walk the entire campus — the pavilions are connected by gardens and each has distinct architectural character. The administration building is the most ornate. The underground tunnels can be visited. The modernisme details (ceramics, mosaics, sculptures) reward close attention. Allow 90 minutes minimum.
Morning on a weekday for the quietest visit. The gardens between pavilions are beautiful in spring and early summer. The proximity to Sagrada Família (10-minute walk) makes combining them logical, though the contrast between the two sites is stark.
Entry €15, free on first Sunday of the month. Located 10 minutes walk north of Sagrada Família — most visitors miss it entirely. Operated as a working hospital for 80 years; the medical functions moved to a modern building in 2009. Domènech i Montaner designed it as a garden hospital with separate pavilions to prevent disease spread — revolutionary at the time. The decorative programme was intended to lift patients' spirits.
