Catalonia's national film archive and cinema, housed in a striking modern building in the Raval designed by Josep Lluís Mateo. The Filmoteca operates two screening rooms programming with the institutional seriousness of a national archive and the curatorial adventurousness of a festival — Catalan and Spanish film history, international retrospectives, experimental work, and the kind of thematic seasons (Buñuel to Almodóvar to contemporary Catalan independents) that assume the audience has been watching cinema seriously and wants to go deeper. The Raval location places it in the heart of Barcelona's most culturally dense neighbourhood, between the CCCB and the MACBA, making it possible to spend an entire day moving between contemporary art, film, and the neighbourhood's street life without crossing a major avenue.

The Catalan and Spanish film retrospectives are the essential programme — seeing Buñuel, Erice, or contemporary Catalan directors in the national archive adds context that streaming cannot provide. Check for experimental and short-film programmes. The two screening rooms allow parallel programming.
Evening screening when the Raval comes alive around you. Combine with MACBA or CCCB for a full cultural day in the neighbourhood. The building's ground-floor café is a good place to read the programme before choosing a screening.
Plaça de Salvador Seguí in the Raval — metro Liceu (L3) or Paral·lel (L2/L3). The building opened in 2012, replacing the Filmoteca's previous scattered locations. Tickets are very inexpensive (under €5). Two screening rooms. The archive holds over 200,000 titles of Catalan, Spanish, and international film. The Raval location means excellent, affordable food within a two-minute walk in any direction. Some screenings have English subtitles for international selections.
