Insider Intel

Don't Miss

Start with the permanent collection of prints and drawings (rotates due to light sensitivity) — Dürer's hare, Klimt drawings, Schiele studies. The Batliner Collection on the top floor covers Monet to Picasso. Do not skip the Habsburg state rooms — gilded, frescoed, and astonishing.

Best Time

Weekday morning for the quietest experience. Wednesday evening (open until 9pm) for smaller crowds. Check the exhibition schedule as temporary shows often rival the permanent collection.

Know Before You Go

Founded in 1776 by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen. The collection includes Dürer's Praying Hands and Young Hare, Michelangelo drawings, and comprehensive Schiele holdings. The building served as a Habsburg residence — the state rooms are original 18th-century interiors. The museum expanded underground in 2003 to add exhibition space without altering the historic palace. One of the five greatest print collections in the world alongside the British Museum and the Met.
