Gothic cathedral at the geographic and spiritual heart of Vienna since 1147. The tiled roof pattern is iconic. The south tower climb (343 stairs, no elevator) delivers the best views in the city — and you earn them.

Climb the south tower (Steffl) for the 360-degree panorama — the Ring, the Danube, the Vienna Woods. The catacombs tour descends to the crypts where Habsburgs and archbishops are buried. The main nave is free to enter and genuinely awe-inspiring when afternoon light hits the stained glass.
Early morning for tower climbing before the crowds (tower opens at 9am). Late afternoon when the western light illuminates the interior. Sunday mass with full choir is powerful if you want the acoustic and ceremonial experience.
The cathedral survived WWII bombing but the roof was destroyed — it was rebuilt tile by tile after 1945. The patterns on the roof (Habsburg eagle, Vienna coat of arms) are best seen from above or from the tower. Mozart married here in 1782 and his funeral was held here in 1791. The 343 spiral stairs up the south tower are narrow and not for anyone uncomfortable with heights or tight spaces. Worth every step.
