Golden-hour Strasbourg with Petite France's half-timbered houses reflected in the canal beneath the cathedral spire

Barrage Vauban

rooftop-viewpoint·$·Petite France

A 17th-century flood-defence dam by the military engineer Vauban, its flat rooftop terrace now the single best free viewpoint in the city — the Ponts Couverts' towers on one side, Petite France's canal houses on the other, the cathedral spire visible above the rooftops between them. Free, uncrowded relative to its view, and easy to miss if you don't know the stairs are there.

Don't Miss

Nothing to order — climb the internal stairs to the rooftop terrace and take the full panoramic view in slowly.

Best Time

Golden hour, for the light across the canal houses and the cathedral spire in the distance.

Know Before You Go

Free entry, easy to walk past — the stairs up to the rooftop terrace are inside the building, not obviously signed from outside.
