Basílica de Santa María del Coro

historic·$·Parte Vieja

18th-century Baroque basilica dedicated to San Sebastian, the city's patron saint. Ornate facade, gilded altarpiece, and the only significant building to survive the 1813 fire that destroyed the old town. The church is the historical and spiritual anchor of Parte Vieja.

Insider Intel

Don't Miss

The facade is the most photographed element — Baroque exuberance facing the narrow streets. Inside, the gilded main altarpiece and side chapels show the wealth of 18th-century San Sebastian. The church is active for worship, so visit respectfully. Services are held in Basque and Spanish.

Best Time

Morning or late afternoon when the church is open but not in use for services. The facade is best photographed in late afternoon light. Mass times vary — check the schedule if you want to attend or avoid.

Know Before You Go

Built in the 1740s on the site of an earlier medieval church. When the British-Portuguese army torched San Sebastian in 1813 during the Peninsular War, this basilica was the only building in the old town to survive. The arrow statue of San Sebastian (the saint, not the city) sits above the portal. The church marks the center of Parte Vieja geographically and historically. Not a major museum attraction but essential for understanding why the old town looks the way it does — everything else was rebuilt after 1813.
