Walk the roof. Start at ground level and follow the ramp up the side. The marble is slippery when wet — watch your step. At the top, turn back to see the city framed by the roofline. The interior is worth seeing if there is a performance or a public tour, but the roof is the essential experience.
Sunset in summer when the low light hits the white marble. Winter for the contrast of snow on the roof and the dark fjord beyond. Morning for solitude. The building is public space — no ticket needed for the roof.
Snøhetta won the competition in 2000. Construction took eight years. The iceberg concept — rising from the water — is literal and effective. The roof has become Oslo's most popular public gathering space. Locals sunbathe here in summer. The Opera is what transformed Bjørvika from industrial harbor to cultural waterfront. Performances inside are world-class but not required to experience the building.
