Munich's most famous beer hall — founded in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V as the court brewery. Yes, it is touristy. It is also genuinely historic, architecturally significant, and the beer is as good as anywhere in Munich. Go anyway.

Enter through the main hall (Schwemme) on the ground floor — vaulted ceiling, long tables, brass band on the stage. Order a Maß (one liter) of Hofbräu Original and pork knuckle or Obatzda with pretzels. Stay for one or two beers. The experience is the point — drinking a liter in a 400-year-old beer hall while a brass band plays Bavarian folk music.
Weekday afternoon for a slightly less overwhelming tourist-to-local ratio. Evening for the full animated experience with the brass band. Avoid peak Oktoberfest weeks unless you enjoy maximum chaos. The Hofbräuhaus operates year-round and seats over 3,000.
Founded in 1589 as the ducal brewery. The current building dates to 1897, rebuilt after WWII bombing. Mozart, Lenin, and Hitler all drank here at different points in history. The regulars (Stammgäste) have reserved tables marked with their names — do not sit at them. Hofbräu brewery is now owned by the Bavarian state government. The beer served here is brewed specifically for the Hofbräuhaus and is slightly different from bottled Hofbräu. Tourists come because it is famous; it is famous because it is genuinely historic and culturally significant. Embrace it.
