Viktualienmarkt

attraction·$$·Altstadt-Lehel

Munich's central food market since 1807 — 140 stalls selling produce, meats, cheeses, flowers, and prepared food. The beer garden in the centre is where locals drink at 11am on a Tuesday without apology. This is where Munich shops and eats.

Insider Intel

Don't Miss

Walk the full market perimeter to see what is being sold. Stop at the fishmongers (excellent smoked fish), the cheese stalls (try Obatzda, the Bavarian beer cheese), and the produce vendors for seasonal fruit. Then claim a table in the central beer garden, order a Maß, and a Leberkäsesemmel (meatloaf sandwich) from the food stalls. Stay as long as feels right.

Best Time

Mid-morning on a weekday for the market at full operation. Saturday morning for peak atmosphere but more crowds. The beer garden rotates which brewery it serves every six weeks — each of Munich's six traditional breweries takes a turn. Closed Sundays and holidays.

Know Before You Go

Established in 1807 when the old market near Marienplatz became too small. Named after 'Viktualien' (Latin for foodstuffs). The maypole in the centre is repainted and re-erected every few years according to tradition. The beer garden operates under Bavarian beer garden law — you can bring your own food but must buy the beer on site. The bronze fountain statues honour Munich folk singers and comedians (Karl Valentin, Liesl Karlstadt, Weiss Ferdl). This market is genuine — locals shop here daily. The tourists are here because locals are here, not the reverse.
