Facing the Bavarian State Opera across Max-Joseph-Platz, the Spatenhaus operates on two floors with two distinct propositions: downstairs, a wood-panelled beer hall serving Bavarian standards with the efficiency and warmth of a kitchen that has been feeding opera-goers for generations; upstairs, a more formal dining room where the same tradition is served with tablecloths and a view of the Residenz. The Wiener Schnitzel is the dish the regulars return for — hammered thin, fried to a golden blister, arriving on a plate large enough to overhang the edges. Spaten beer from the tap. The atmosphere is old Munich without the tourist performance of the larger beer halls: locals in the audience, opera programmes on the table, the quiet satisfaction of a restaurant that knows its role and performs it nightly.

Insider Intel
Wiener Schnitzel — the signature, hammered thin and fried to golden perfection, oversized and unapologetic. Schweinshaxn for the full Bavarian commitment. Obatzda and a Brezn to start. Spaten beer from the tap — the brewery's flagship is the house pour. Upstairs for formality; downstairs for energy.
Pre-opera dinner — the location exists for this purpose and the kitchen is calibrated to deliver a full meal before curtain. Reserve for upstairs dining; downstairs is walk-in. Post-opera for a nightcap and late supper. Weeknights are calmer.
Residenzstrasse 12, facing the Opera. Odeonsplatz U-Bahn or Marienplatz, 3 minutes on foot. Mains EUR 18-32. Reservations recommended for upstairs; downstairs accepts walk-ins. Pre-opera dining is the sweet spot — arrive by 6pm for a relaxed meal. Spaten beer on tap. Cards accepted.
