Herzog & de Meuron's waterfront museum on Biscayne Bay is as much an architectural argument as an art institution. The building floats above the park on stilts, its canopy extending outward to create shaded outdoor galleries where hanging gardens drip tropical vegetation against the bay backdrop. The permanent collection centres on 20th and 21st-century art of the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Atlantic rim — the geographic focus is deliberate and makes PAMM the institutional expression of Miami's position as a cultural bridge between the hemispheres. The temporary exhibitions are consistently ambitious and the building itself is a permanent exhibition of how architecture can mediate between interior and landscape.

Enter through the ground-level park and appreciate the building's relationship to the bay before going inside. The hanging garden sculptures by Patrick Blanc are a transition between outside and in. The permanent collection galleries on the upper floors have the bay views that frame the art. The temporary exhibition spaces host the museum's most ambitious programming. The outdoor terraces are public and free — use them for the view even if you do not enter the museum.
Weekday mornings from 10am to noon for the smallest crowds and the best light in the galleries. The first Thursday of each month is free admission and draws a larger, more diverse crowd. Saturday mornings before Art Basel season are calm. Avoid the opening weekend of major exhibitions when the crowds peak.
Located in Museum Park on Biscayne Boulevard, between the Adrienne Arsht Center and the Frost Science Museum. The two museums share a waterfront park and can be combined in a day. Admission is ticketed; check the website for current pricing and free days. The museum shop is excellent for art books and design objects. The outdoor spaces — terraces, gardens, the park below — are free and accessible without admission. Parking in the Museum Park garage or Metromover to Museum Park station. The cafe has bay views and decent food.
