The film archive and screening programme of UNAM — the largest university in the Americas — housed on the UNESCO-listed Ciudad Universitaria campus. Filmoteca UNAM preserves Mexican film history and screens from its archive with the academic rigour of a university institution and the programming ambition of a national cinematheque. The screenings are often free or nearly free, the audience is a mix of students and cinephiles, and the campus setting — surrounded by murals by Juan O'Gorman, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and other muralists — gives every visit a broader cultural context. The archive holds over 48,000 titles, including rare Mexican silent films, golden age classics, and contemporary work.

Insider Intel

Don't Miss

Check the Filmoteca schedule for screenings — the programme runs Mexican film history, international retrospectives, and restored prints from the archive. Many screenings are free. The Ciudad Universitaria campus is itself a UNESCO World Heritage site with murals and modernist architecture worth a separate visit. Combine with a walk through the central campus to see the O'Gorman mosaic library facade and the Siqueiros murals.

Best Time

Weekday afternoon screenings when the student audience is present and the campus is alive. The campus is extensive — arrive early to walk the grounds. Combine with the MUAC (University Museum of Contemporary Art) on the same campus for a full cultural half-day.

Know Before You Go

UNAM's Ciudad Universitaria campus is in the south of the city — metro Universidad (Line 3) or Uber from Roma/Condesa (30–40 minutes). The campus is massive; the Filmoteca screening rooms are in the cultural zone near the central library. Free or very low-cost screenings. The archive is the largest film collection in Mexico and one of the most important in Latin America. The campus is a UNESCO site (inscribed 2007) and the architecture alone justifies the trip. Combine with Coyoacan (nearby) for a full southern CDMX day.
