The old-school Lisbon institution where presunto (dry-cured ham from the Alentejo) hangs from the ceiling and the waiters have worked the floor long enough to know what you need before you do. Solar dos Presuntos has served politicians, fado singers, and families celebrating since 1974, and the kitchen runs on the kind of generous, uncompromising Portuguese cooking that makes you wonder why the country ever needed a food revolution. Seafood towers, whole fish, roasted kid — the plates arrive sized for people who came hungry and intend to leave defeated.

Insider Intel

Must Try

Presunto carved from the leg as a starter — this is the house religion. Arroz de marisco (seafood rice, soupy and intense, enough for two). Bacalhau a Solar (the house preparation of salt cod). Roasted cabrito (kid goat) from the Minho. The shellfish platter if you are celebrating. Vinho verde to start, then a red from the Douro or Alentejo.

Best Time

Lunch from 12:30 for the full Portuguese midday meal experience — the room fills with businesspeople and families and the energy is magnificent. Dinner from 19:30 is equally strong. Book ahead, always — this restaurant has been full since the revolution.

Know Before You Go

Operating since 1974 on the restaurant street near Rossio. The room is large, formal in a Portuguese way (which means warm rather than stiff), and the service is old-school professional. Portions are enormous — order less than you think you need. The bill can climb quickly with seafood and presunto, but the quality justifies the spend. Rua das Portas de Santo Antao has many tourist traps; Solar dos Presuntos is emphatically not one of them. Jacket not required but the room leans smart.
