The Black Cat espresso blend is the house signature and a reliable anchor. A cappuccino for the milk work. Avoid anything with flavoured syrup; the coffee does not need it and the baristas will judge you. The pastry case is sourced from local bakeries and above average.
Weekday morning at 8am when the cafe has its working rhythm — regulars at the counter, the espresso machine in steady use, the morning light through the windows. Weekend mornings are busier but the Lakeview location handles volume well. The training bar is most active during weekday hours if you want to watch the process.
Multiple Chicago locations — Broadway/Lakeview is the flagship, the Millennium Park location is tourist-convenient, and the Wicker Park location is the newest.
