Editor's Pick

The company that brought third-wave coffee to Chicago and helped define the movement nationally, roasting since 1995 with a direct-trade sourcing model that predated the industry's embrace of the concept by a decade. The Broadway flagship in Lakeview is the original cafe — a long, light-filled space with a training bar where the baristas pull shots with the concentration of people who understand that espresso is chemistry and timing compressed into thirty seconds. The coffee is consistently excellent: precise extraction, clean flavour profiles, seasonal single-origins rotated with the attention of a wine programme. Intelligentsia has grown into a national brand without losing the craft at the bar, which is the rarest trick in the coffee business.

A single-origin pour-over — the method that reveals Intelligentsia's sourcing best, and the baristas will talk you through the current offerings with genuine knowledge. The Black Cat espresso blend is the house signature and a reliable anchor. A cappuccino for the milk work. Avoid anything with flavoured syrup; the coffee does not need it and the baristas will judge you. The pastry case is sourced from local bakeries and above average.

Best Time

Weekday morning at 8am when the cafe has its working rhythm — regulars at the counter, the espresso machine in steady use, the morning light through the windows. Weekend mornings are busier but the Lakeview location handles volume well. The training bar is most active during weekday hours if you want to watch the process.

Know Before You Go

Multiple Chicago locations — Broadway/Lakeview is the flagship, the Millennium Park location is tourist-convenient, and the Wicker Park location is the newest. All serve the same coffee but the Broadway shop has the most character. The direct-trade model means the staff can tell you about the farm where your coffee was grown, and they will if you ask. Wi-Fi is available and the space is laptop-friendly during off-peak hours. Espresso drinks run $5-7. Retail bags of roasted coffee are available and make a better souvenir than anything on the Magnificent Mile.
