Maria's Packaged Goods and Community Bar

A former packaged-goods store in Bridgeport — the South Side neighbourhood that produced five Chicago mayors — transformed into a craft cocktail bar and community hub that retains its liquor-store bones. The Marszewski brothers kept the package-goods license, the coolers, and the neighbourhood clientele, then added a cocktail programme, a DJ booth, an art gallery, and a cultural programming schedule that makes the bar a genuine civic space. The crowd mixes South Side lifers with artists, academics from nearby IIT and U of C, and cocktail pilgrims who make the trip from the North Side because the drinks and the atmosphere cannot be replicated up there.

The cocktail menu draws from Eastern European and Mexican flavours that reflect Bridgeport's demographics — drinks built with aquavit, mezcal, and house-made shrubs alongside the standard repertoire. The craft beer selection is deep and local. The shot-and-a-beer combination is a Bridgeport tradition and is priced accordingly. Ask about whatever art show or cultural event is currently running — the programming is genuinely interesting.

Best Time

Friday or Saturday from 8pm when the DJ programming starts and the room fills with the particular mix of people that makes Maria's unique. Weeknights are quieter and better for conversation at the bar. The cultural events (art openings, screenings, lectures) happen on variable schedules — check the website.

Know Before You Go

Bridgeport is the South Side, which means North Side visitors sometimes hesitate. Do not. The neighbourhood is safe, historically fascinating (old Daley machine territory), and Maria's is worth the trip. Take the Orange Line to Halsted or rideshare. The packaged-goods side means you can buy bottles and cans to take home alongside your bar order. Street parking is easy. Open late. The community programming — zines, art, film, politics — is not decoration but the bar's actual identity.
