A former cotton guild headquarters on Gran Via — the 19th-century textile merchants built this as their palace, and the current hotel conversion (by Lazaro Rosa-Violan) treats the original architectural ambition with the respect it deserves: the spiral staircase, the library, the high ceilings, and the particular grandeur of a building that was designed to project the power of an industry that once defined Barcelona's economy. The rooms are luxurious without being excessive, and the building's history — cotton made Barcelona rich, and this building was cotton's throne room — gives the hotel a narrative that no new-build can manufacture.
