Lluís Domènech i Montaner's UNESCO-listed Modernisme hospital in El Guinardó — and one of Barcelona's great overlooked masterpieces, overshadowed only by the Sagrada Família a few blocks away. The complex is a fantasia of tiled domes, mosaics, sculpture, and pavilions linked by underground passages, built on the belief that beauty itself aided healing. It functioned as a working hospital for most of a century before being restored as a cultural site. For visitors willing to venture beyond the central sights, it rewards with some of the most exuberant Modernisme architecture in the city, and a fraction of the crowds.
