Golden hour Rome with terracotta rooftops and ancient domes

San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane

religious·Quirinale

Borromini's tiny Baroque masterpiece at the Quirinale crossroads — a church so small it would fit inside one pier of St Peter's, yet packed with more invention than buildings ten times its size. The undulating facade ripples in and out, and inside, an oval coffered dome seems to float and dissolve overhead through hidden light. It was the great Baroque architect's first independent commission and, by some accounts, his finest. For visitors, it's a lesson in genius working at small scale — a dense, dazzling jewel of curves and light, easily paired with Bernini's nearby church for a study in Baroque rivalry.
