Prague rooftops with spires and astronomical clock tower

Municipal House (Obecní dům)

art-nouveau·Old Town

A sumptuous Art Nouveau concert hall and civic building beside the Powder Tower — every surface mosaicked, muralled, and gilded, with works by leading Czech artists of the era and the great Smetana Hall at its heart. It was here, in 1918, that Czechoslovak independence was declared, giving it national as well as artistic weight. The café and restaurant preserve the full Art Nouveau splendor. For visitors, it's one of Prague's most lavish interiors — a total work of early-20th-century decorative art, best experienced at a concert in Smetana Hall or, failing that, over coffee beneath the painted ceilings.
