Medieval castle and fortress built around 1300, expanded over centuries. Perched on a promontory overlooking the harbor. Still an active military area but open to the public. The grounds are free and offer the best harbor views in central Oslo.

Walk the fortress grounds at your own pace. The ramparts provide panoramic views toward Aker Brygge and the fjord. The castle interior houses museums (Norwegian Resistance Museum is worthwhile) but the real draw is the setting. Bring a coffee and sit on the walls at sunset.
Late afternoon for the golden light on the harbor. Summer evenings when the grounds are open late. The fortress hosts concerts and events — check the schedule.
Akershus was built by King Håkon V and has never been successfully captured by foreign forces. The fortress played a central role during World War II — used by Nazi occupiers, and the site of resistance executions. The Norwegian Resistance Museum tells that story with necessary gravity. The grounds remain partially active military territory. Free to walk, paid entry for museums.
