Twilight French Quarter with jazz clubs and wrought-iron balconies

Coop's Place

casual·$·French Quarter

A dark, cramped, no-frills Cajun restaurant on Decatur Street where the rabbit and sausage jambalaya is among the best in the city and the atmosphere is the opposite of everything the French Quarter's tourist restaurants represent. Coop's does not have a host stand, a dress code, or a polite waiting area — you stand in the doorway until a seat opens, you order from a menu that has not changed because it does not need to, and you eat food that tastes like someone's Cajun grandmother is working the line, which is approximately the case. The bar takes up half the room and the kitchen takes up the other half.

Must Try

Rabbit and sausage jambalaya — non-negotiable. This is the dish that Coop's is famous for and the one that justifies the wait. The crawfish etouffee is the backup if you need a second dish to share. The red beans and rice are honest. Do not expect refinement; expect food that is deeply, unapologetically Cajun in a room that matches.

Best Time

Late night when you need real Cajun food after drinking on Decatur Street — the kitchen runs late and the bar crowd provides its own entertainment. Lunch is less crowded but the wait can still be significant because the space holds perhaps 40 people. Weeknights are slightly more manageable.

Know Before You Go

Cards accepted. Expect to wait — the space is tiny and there is no reservation system. The dark, bar-heavy room is not for everyone; it is for people who want serious Cajun food without the pretence that usually accompanies it in the French Quarter. Locals know about Coop's and the line reflects that. The Decatur Street location is in the heart of the Quarter but the restaurant operates as though it is in a different city entirely.
