Munich's oldest cafe, established in 1775 by an Italian immigrant named Luigi Tambosi who saw in Odeonsplatz a terrace opportunity that has not been surpassed in two and a half centuries. The location is the cafe's enduring genius: tables facing the Theatinerkirche's yellow baroque facade on one side, the Hofgarten's arched entry on the other, and the Feldherrnhalle completing a backdrop that makes every coffee feel like a scene from a period film. Inside, the cafe has been renovated beyond its historical bones, but the terrace — shaded by the Hofgarten's trees, warmed by the square's reflected light — remains one of Europe's great outdoor cafe seats. The coffee and food are serviceable rather than remarkable. You are paying for the setting, and the setting is worth every cent.

Coffee on the terrace — any coffee, because the terrace is the point. A Melange for the Viennese tradition that Munich cafes inherited. Cake from the display if it appeals. A light lunch if the terrace has captured you and leaving feels premature. The view of the Theatinerkirche is the main course.
Late morning through afternoon when the terrace catches sunlight and the Odeonsplatz is at its most theatrical. Summer is prime terrace season but spring and autumn days are equally beautiful with fewer crowds. The Hofgarten entrance beside the cafe rewards a post-coffee walk.
Odeonsplatz 18. Odeonsplatz U-Bahn (U3/U4/U5/U6), directly adjacent. Coffee EUR 4-6, lunch EUR 12-20. The terrace is first-come; arrive before noon on summer weekends. Munich's oldest cafe — since 1775. The Hofgarten is directly beside and free to enter. Schumann's Bar is across the square for evening continuation. Cards accepted.
