Los Angeles

A city of private narratives, written in sunlight and traffic.

LA is a constellation of cities pretending to be one. You don't visit the whole thing; you hop between its brightest stars—a downtown arts cluster, a canyon enclave, a beach town. Freeways are the connective tissue; surface streets are where you find the pulse.

Locals name freeways with 'the': it’s ‘the 101,’ not ‘Highway 101.’

The weather report is a lie. It can be 65 degrees and foggy in Santa Monica and 95 in the Valley, on the same day, at the same time.

Most of the palm trees aren’t native; they were planted for the 1932 Olympics to look good on camera.

  • Plan your day by neighborhood, not by activity. Crossing the city for a single taco is a rookie mistake.
  • A car is not optional. And always add 20 minutes to whatever your map app tells you. Always.
  • Read parking signs twice. A green curb on Tuesday might be a tow-away zone on Wednesday morning.
  • Bring layers. The temperature can drop 20 degrees between inland and the coast. You'll want a sweater by the beach at night.
  • Keep small bills in your car. You’ll need cash for valet, tips, and the best taco stands.
