La Descarga hides behind an unmarked door on Western Avenue, which in Hollywood is less a design choice than a dare. Pass through and descend into a two-level Cuban rum bar where live percussion rattles the walls, burlesque dancers command a small stage, and one of the deepest rum collections in Los Angeles lines the back bar like a library of the Caribbean. The space is theatrical in the way Havana nightclubs were theatrical before the revolution, all velvet and smoke and the feeling that the evening might go anywhere. Upstairs is intimate and conversational. Downstairs belongs to the music and the bodies moving to it. The rum selection alone justifies the visit, but the atmosphere is what makes you return.

Work through the rum flights organized by origin and age. The daiquiri here is built with the respect the drink deserves. Ask the bartender to choose something aged and sippable when you are ready to slow down.
Weekends after ten when the live music and burlesque performances are in full swing and the room achieves its intended intensity. Weeknights are quieter and better for exploring the rum menu with focused attention.
Reservations are strongly recommended and sometimes required. The entrance is intentionally hard to find, which is the point. Dress well. This is not a casual drop-in, it is an occasion, and the room expects you to treat it as one.
