Insider Intel
Reserve timed entry weeks in advance — walk-up queues can be 2+ hours. Start with the Botticelli rooms (10-14), then move chronologically or skip to Caravaggio and the 16th-century rooms. The terrace café has Palazzo Vecchio views and is good for a break. Allow 3-4 hours minimum if you care about the work. The rooftop terrace (opened 2022) is worth the climb.
First entry slot (8:15am) for the quietest experience. Weekday mornings off-season. Late afternoon entries (after 3pm) have shorter queues but you will feel rushed. Summer weekends are overwhelming — avoid unless you booked months ahead.
The Uffizi was built as offices (uffizi) for Florentine magistrates — the Medici converted the upper floor to a gallery in the 16th century. The collection was bequeathed to Florence by the last Medici, Anna Maria Luisa, in 1743 with the condition it never leave the city. Photography allowed without flash. Ticket includes Palazzo Pitti on a different day if you upgrade. The Vasari Corridor reopened in 2024 with a new ticketed format — connects Uffizi to Palazzo Pitti across the Arno. Advance booking required. Genuinely one of the 5-10 best art museums in the world.
