Walk up from Porta San Niccolo (20 min climb, steep but beautiful through olive groves) or take bus 12 or 13 from the center. Sunset is peak crowds but the light on the Duomo is worth it. Grab a gelato or spritz from the vendors and claim a spot on the wall. Continue up to San Miniato al Monte (10 min walk) for the next level of views and far fewer people.
Sunrise if you can manage it — the city wakes up below and you will have the terrace almost alone. Golden hour before sunset for the classic light. Midday is harsh and crowded. Full moon nights are atmospheric if clear. Avoid the hours when tour buses dominate (11am-2pm).
Built in 1869 by architect Giuseppe Poggi as part of a major urban redesign when Florence was briefly Italy's capital. The David replica was cast in 1873. Yes, it is touristy. Yes, it is overrun at sunset. It is also the postcard view of Florence for a reason and the light is genuinely beautiful. If crowds bother you, go at sunrise or walk further up to San Miniato. The walk down through the rose garden (Giardino delle Rose) is lovely in spring.
