Climb toward Bellosguardo or San Niccolo for olive trees, villas, and views that replace crowds with cypresses. Steep lanes reward with panoramas over terracotta roofs and the Arno's curve. San Niccolo keeps bars and gelaterie at the base; Bellosguardo is more residential and quiet.

Sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo sits between, crowded but worth at least one visit. Up here, Florence feels like a painting with better air and fewer scooters. Follow Viale Poggi's ramps, pause at the Rose and Iris gardens when in bloom, and listen to the bells drift upward.

Small ateliers hide behind gates; wine bars pour glasses to locals watching the river glow. Nights are darker, stars more visible, and the city hum becomes background music instead of conversation.

Basilica di San Miniato al Monte

Romanesque hilltop basilica built in 1013, with green-white marble facade, golden mosaics, and Benedictine monks still singing Gregorian chant at vespers. The monumental cemetery spreads below. Florence's best views with 5% of Piazzale Michelangelo's crowds. Sublime.

Order: Attend vespers (5:30pm in summer, 5pm in winter) to hear the monks sing Gregorian chant in the basilica — free, atmospheric, and genuinely transporting. The crypt and raised choir are beautiful. Walk the cemetery for elaborate 19th-century tombs and city views. Sunset light on the marble facade is exceptional.Best: Late afternoon to catch vespers and stay for sunset. Morning for peaceful contemplation before the day heats up. The walk up from Piazzale Michelangelo takes 10 minutes through quiet lanes. Far quieter than the piazza below.

Piazzale Michelangelo

Panoramic terrace on the south bank hills with the most famous view of Florence: Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Arno valley framed by Tuscan hills. Bronze replica of David at the center. Tourist buses, street vendors, and genuinely stunning light at sunset. Go anyway.

Order: Walk up from Porta San Niccolo (20 min climb, steep but beautiful through olive groves) or take bus 12 or 13 from the center. Sunset is peak crowds but the light on the Duomo is worth it. Grab a gelato or spritz from the vendors and claim a spot on the wall. Continue up to San Miniato al Monte (10 min walk) for the next level of views and far fewer people.Best: Sunrise if you can manage it — the city wakes up below and you will have the terrace almost alone. Golden hour before sunset for the classic light. Midday is harsh and crowded. Full moon nights are atmospheric if clear. Avoid the hours when tour buses dominate (11am-2pm).
