Copenhagen's iconic 17th-century canal with coloured townhouses, moored wooden ships, and the most photographed waterfront in Scandinavia. Yes, it's touristy. Here's how to do it correctly.

Insider Intel

Don't Miss

Walk the north side (sunny side) in the afternoon. Have a beer at one of the restaurants on the canal — not because the food is exceptional but because it's genuinely pleasant with a beer in hand watching the boats. Then walk south along the harbour to the quieter stretches.

Best Time

Morning before 9am for photographs without crowds. Late afternoon for the golden light on the painted facades. Summer evenings for the full animated version. Winter is atmospheric too — Christmas market and candlelit windows.

Know Before You Go

The tourist concentration on Nyhavn is real — it's Europe's most popular Instagram location in Scandinavia for a reason. Hans Christian Andersen lived here (three different addresses). The food at the canalside restaurants is overpriced for what it is. But dismissing Nyhavn entirely is wrong — walk it early or late, and walk past it toward Ofelia Plads for the harbour views beyond.
