Frank Gehry's titanium-clad museum opened in 1997 and single-handedly rewrote Bilbao's future, turning a declining industrial port into an international destination — the so-called 'Bilbao effect.' The building curls along the Nervión like something washed up from the sea, its panels shifting colour with the weather. Jeff Koons's flower-covered Puppy guards the entrance; Louise Bourgeois's giant spider Maman crouches on the riverside.
