Largest Gothic cathedral in the world, built on the site of the city's grand mosque. The Giralda — former minaret turned bell tower — offers rooftop views after climbing 35 ramps (no stairs). Columbus is supposedly buried here.

Climb the Giralda first while you have energy — the ramps were designed for horseback ascent, so it is easier than stairs but still 104 meters of incline. The views of the Alcázar gardens and the city are essential. Then the cathedral interior: the main altarpiece is the world's largest, the Columbus tomb is theatrical in the best way. The Patio de los Naranjos (orange tree courtyard) is the remnant of the mosque — peaceful and historically significant.
Monday mornings are quietest. Buy tickets online to skip the queue. Avoid mid-afternoon in summer when the interior is stifling. The cathedral closes for Mass and special events — check the schedule.
Completed in 1528 after over a century of construction. Built deliberately to be the largest church in Christendom — the chapter famously declared they would build something so grand that future generations would think them mad. The Giralda was the minaret of the 12th-century Almohad mosque; the cathedral builders kept it and added Christian bells. Dress code is enforced (shoulders and knees covered). Columbus's tomb is contested by Santo Domingo, but Sevilla insists. The scale is overwhelming — intentionally so.
