Top of the Rock (ticketed) for the observation deck — three levels of outdoor viewing. The sunken plaza below is famous for the ice rink (winter) and outdoor dining (summer). The Prometheus statue overlooks the plaza. NBC Studios and Radio City Music Hall are part of the complex but missable unless you have specific interest.
Sunset from Top of the Rock — book tickets for 45 minutes before sunset to catch both day and night views. The Christmas tree (November–January) draws massive crowds but is genuinely spectacular. Avoid midday when tourist volume peaks.
Commissioned by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and built 1930–1939 during the Great Depression. The complex employed 40,000 workers during construction. Top of the Rock reopened in 2005 after decades of closure — the views north toward Central Park and south toward the Empire State Building are the best in Midtown. Timed tickets required for Top of the Rock. The observation deck has both indoor and outdoor levels. Better than the Empire State Building for actual views.
