Insider Intel
The outdoor memorial (free) can be visited without entering the museum. The twin reflecting pools with the names of the 2,977 victims are the primary memorial. The museum (ticketed) contains artifacts, timelines, and recorded testimony. Plan 2–3 hours minimum for the museum. This is not a casual visit.
Weekday mornings for smaller crowds. The museum requires timed tickets — book in advance online. The memorial plaza is open daily 7:30am–9pm and is less crowded early or late.
Opened in 2011 (memorial) and 2014 (museum). Designed by Michael Arad and Peter Walker. The reflecting pools are the largest man-made waterfalls in North America. The museum contains steel from the towers, damaged fire trucks, and personal artifacts. It is emotionally difficult — that is the point. Photography restrictions apply inside the museum. The Survivor Tree (a Callery pear that survived the collapse) stands on the memorial plaza. Free entry to the memorial; museum requires tickets.
