In the Carlyle Hotel on East 76th Street, Bemelmans Bar exists in a state of preservation most New York institutions can only envy. Ludwig Bemelmans — the illustrator who created the Madeline books — painted the murals on these walls in 1947, reportedly in exchange for lodging for his family. The scenes depict Central Park in all seasons, rendered in the whimsical line that made Madeline beloved. Beneath these murals, a live jazz pianist plays nightly to a room of leather banquettes, white-jacketed servers, and cocktails built with the quiet formality of a hotel bar that has never chased a trend. The Martini arrives cold and correct. The bill arrives and reminds you that elegance has never been inexpensive.

A Martini — cold, dry, and served in a room that justifies the formality of the glass. A Manhattan for the stirred alternative. The Old Fashioned is built with the precision of a hotel bar that has served thousands. Classic cocktails suit the setting; this is not the room for experimental drinks or elaborate garnishes.
Evening from 8pm when the live jazz pianist is playing and the murals are lit by the warm amber light that makes the room feel suspended in time. Weeknights are slightly less crowded and allow for conversation between sets. Dress appropriately — the Carlyle expects effort, and the room rewards it.
