One of the world's great archaeological museums — the Pompeii and Herculaneum collections, Farnese sculptures, and the Secret Cabinet of erotic art. If you're visiting Pompeii, come here first or after. The context transforms the ruins.

Insider Intel
Ground floor: Farnese collection including the colossal Farnese Hercules and Farnese Bull. Mezzanine: mosaics from Pompeii (the Alexander Mosaic is staggering). First floor: frescoes, domestic objects, the Secret Cabinet (erotic art from Pompeii brothels and homes). Allow 2-3 hours minimum. The Egyptian collection is also significant but less essential.
Weekday morning for manageable crowds. The museum can be overwhelming in size and density — don't try to see everything. Summer afternoons bring school groups. First Sunday of the month is free but packed.
Opened in 1816, built into a 16th-century cavalry barracks. The Farnese collection came from Rome. The Pompeii artefacts were excavated starting in 1748 and have been amassed here ever since. The Secret Cabinet was locked away for decades (considered too obscene) — now openly displayed and genuinely fascinating for what it reveals about Roman domestic life. MANN is essential if you're visiting Pompeii — seeing the villa frescoes and mosaics here gives the empty ruins meaning. One of Europe's top five archaeology museums.
