Galleria Umberto I

A grand 19th-century shopping arcade near the San Carlo opera house — a soaring cross of iron-and-glass roofing over patterned marble floors, built as Naples' answer to Milan's famous Galleria. Light pours through the great dome onto the mosaic pavement below, where cafés and shops occupy the arms of the cross. It was conceived as part of the city's grand post-unification renewal. For visitors, it's a magnificent public space to walk through — a monument to 19th-century civic confidence, its glass dome one of the most photographed interiors in Naples, and a cool, luminous refuge from the streets outside.
